Linux Specialist for Cloud Operations - Max EU80k + Bonus & Shares - Dublin, Ireland
Salary: Max EU80,000 plus bonus, shares and good benefits
THE COMPANY AND SITUATION OVERVIEW:
A hugely successful and very fast-growing multi-billion dollar ITSM company requires an individual with strong Linux skills to fill a Site Reliability Engineer role: An operational post administering a Cloud infrastructure. The intention here is that those who respond to a support issue are also those that resolve it, hence there is a great deal of training and development on offer to ensure you are capable of that.
This is a role for career Linux people, those who are Linux through-and-through, passionate advocates of Linux and very non-Microsoft! This team doesn't have any Windows stuff at all and have told me if you have any Microsoft certifications then you're probably not right for them, but if you have a Red Hat Certification (RHCA) then you're almost guaranteed an interview!
Those whose experience is a near 50/50 mix of Windows and Linux tend to be rejected, but if you're a Linux specialist, then read on!
The experience they are seeking is as follows:
A minimum of 3 years of post-graduate commercial experience in IT.
Linux - excellent knowledge of Linux command line and systems diagnostics: Can be either CentOS or Red Hat
Experience in Operations: We mean having worked in an operations environment, including incident management, supporting products and services.
Please note the above are essential: You require all of the above to be eligible for this role.
Although this IS an operational role, this is NOT a NOC: This is a highly technical environment, for which they require engineers, in a role in which no two issues are ever the same! In this role, they want those who respond to a support issue to be those who also resolve that issue and they will equip you to do that with extensive training and support.
The crux of the role is ensuring the reliability of a Cloud infrastructure, through systems administration, monitoring and then responding to issues when they arise. As the hiring manager for this role put it, they want people with that masochistic gene who wake up in the morning and think Great, I'm going to have some issues to deal with today. We're looking for drivers. We're not looking for people whose best work is behind them, we're looking for people whose best work is ahead of them.
The plan here is to make the Site Reliability Engineering team the destination, not part of the journey. In this role you will be the resolving agent for every issue you encounter and they will equip you to do that. They're aiming to give you interesting work, ever-changing work and to increase your skills set in the process.
As for career path, there are other areas you could move to from here, such as systems engineering, network engineering, software development, infrastructure performance and deep-dive Linux engineering.
Why come here though, what's the attraction?
Because firstly, organisationally, there's not many organisations that can touch this one for growth. That growth drives a real change and innovation culture within the business and excellence is rewarded. If you do your job and you do it well, you will be rewarded. That same drive and growth within the business presents a lot of opportunities for people.
The current strategy is about driving improvements, so you can come in at this level of site reliability engineering and help mould a world class operational environment. This is a continuously evolving, continuously growing environment.
